An earache with a small child can be painful for the child and especially for new parents. Are antibiotics the answer?

In a publication from “Choosing Wisely,” created by the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation, and endorsed by the American Academy of Family Physicians, physicians and parents are encouraged to delay antibiotic treatment in favor of observation.

It may be surprising for parents to learn that:

  • Antibiotics won’t help clear-up all ear infections because some are caused by viruses
  • Antibiotics won’t reduce pain
  • Most infections go away on their own in a few days in children two and up
