Graphic with a yellow caution sign accompanied by the language "consumer advisory follow up"Benton County Public Health Director, Melissa Smith, RN, BSN is making the public aware of additional information as a follow-up to the consumer advisory issued for chicken salad purchased at Fareway Food stores earlier in February.

CDC, public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium infections. As of February 21, 2018, 65 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium have been reported from 5 states including Iowa.

“First of all, if anyone has the implicated chicken salad, it should be thrown away immediately. Do not return it to the store,” states Smith. Fareway has not sold the product since Friday, February 9, 2018. Since the product has a 4-day use-by date, there should no longer be product in the community (unless it has been frozen).

Anyone who may have consumed the chicken salad should watch for symptoms. Usually, people who get Salmonella infection develop symptoms within 12 to 36 hours after ingesting the bacteria, but symptoms can appear as early as six hours and as late as three days after ingestion.  Symptoms of Salmonella infection generally last four-to-seven days and include diarrhea, headache, fever, nausea, abdominal pain, dehydration, vomiting, muscle pains, and bloody stools.

Many people get better without treatment, but in some cases, people can become dehydrated, which can sometimes result in hospitalization. It is important whenever you have diarrhea that you drink plenty of fluids. If you are ill, you should contact your healthcare provider.
