It’s not too late to get your flu vaccine! The weather has gotten colder and the peak of the flu season is almost upon us. Virginia Gay urges everyone to get their flu vaccine now to allow it the appropriate time of two weeks to take effect. Last year 80,000 children, adolescents, adults, and seniors lost their lives to influenza-related causes. The flu vaccine is your best defense against Influenza.
There is a cost of getting the vaccine; however, in most instances, insurance will cover the cost. Vaccinations are available from clinics and many pharmacies. If you already have a medical appointment scheduled, ask for the vaccine during your visit. At Virginia Gay’s Family Medical Clinics, we will update your health record, check for any other vaccinations you may need, and be sure you receive the vaccine recommended for your age group.
The Benton County Public Health Department is available for on-site flu vaccinations for businesses, and organizations throughout the county. To learn more call the Benton County Public Health Department at Virginia Gay Hospital, 319-472-6200.
You can also #FightTheFlu for yourself and those around you with everyday preventative actions like covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough and when you sneeze, washing your hands often with soap and water, and by not touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. The flu virus can “survive” on some surfaces for up to 48 hours, so cleaning and disinfecting desks, countertops and other frequently used surfaces and objects like toys, that may be harboring the disease may reduce the spread of flu.
