Virginia Gay Hospital is partnering with federal, state and Benton County Public Health (VGH Home Health) departments on allocation and distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine. We have begun employee vaccinations and have also vaccinated N&R residents wanting to receive the vaccine.
Right now there is a limited supply of COVID-19 vaccine. More shipments of vaccine are expected in the following weeks and months, making it available to anyone who wants it. Until additional shipments of vaccine are received, the CDC and Iowa Department of Public Health are making recommendations on who should get these first shipments
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) along with input from Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has recommended that initial phase of the COVID-19 program- Phase 1a, should be offered to
- Residents and staff of long-term care facilities
- Healthcare personnel
It is unknown exactly how long the first phase of vaccine distribution to healthcare workers will last. The next phase to follow will expand to other essential workers and high-risk patients. This means that we do not anticipate the COVID-19 vaccine will be widely available to patients/general public until spring 2021 or later.
Until a vaccine is distributed to the general public (and even for some time after), we MUST remain vigilant. Please wear your mask, limit indoor gatherings, practice social distancing, washing your hands for at least 20 seconds and stay home when you’re sick.
