Virginia Gay Hospital has introduced personal dietary guidance through one-on-one meetings with Sara Wattnem, Virginia Gay’s clinical dietician. The first one-hour consultation and planning session is $40. Additional visits with Sara can be scheduled as needed. Call Sara at 319-472-6224 to schedule your consultation.
Participation in this service does not require a referral from either your doctor or your insurance company. Those interested simply need to call to schedule an appointment. The first step will include creating goals that can be monitored together.
“My goal,” says Sara, “is to provide customized information and to develop plans to meet specific, individual goals. I will work one-on-one with each person, helping reach their health goals, whether the goal is weight management, disease management, or sports nutrition.”
Sara is also concerned that nutrition and weight management information can be overwhelming and confusing. “There is so much information on nutrition and weight management that it can be hard to determine what is true and what sources can be trusted,” Sara said. “Some common questions from the people I’ve met with include, how to burn off stored fat, how many calories are in a pound, how to get enough nutrients without eating too much, and whether a juice cleanse will make someone lose weight. The list goes on and on. Often they believe what they find from a Google search or something a doctor on television has recommended. Those sources don’t always have the best information needed to achieve better health.”
“I want to help improve health, wellness and meet weight management goals without fads or gimmicks. I am hoping that by taking advantage of this service people will notice how healthy eating habits and lifestyle changes can positively impact their body image, improve their overall health, and improve all aspects of their life. Even little changes can make a big difference. ”
Sara brings 19 years of healthcare experience to her role as Clinical Dietitian. She has earned bachelors degrees from both Kaplan University and Kansas State University. She completed a 1,200-hour graduate internship at Iowa State University and is a registered and licensed dietitian in the State of Iowa. Sara is a Level 1 Diabetes Educator and is working towards becoming a Certified Diabetes Educator.
As Virginia Gay Hospital’s clinical dietitian, Sara has implemented improvements to the dietary department including a “Grab-N-Go” program for employees and hospital guests, Fresh Fruit Fridays and new menus for Nursing & Rehab.
“My role in the consultations isn’t to take away food that people enjoy and make them eat “rabbit food” instead,” explains Sara. “I want to work with their lifestyle and tweak things to help them get what they want out of life while still finding enjoyment in food that’s good, and good for them.”
