Employee Spotlight – Sherri Isbell – Chief Information Officer – 29 Years of Service

My name is Sherri Isbell. I am the Chief Information Officer and have been employed at VGH for 29 years. As CIO I manage the computer and software systems for our hospital and clinics including communication equipment, printers, network infrastructure, and badge and camera security systems. In addition to overseeing daily IT operations, I serve as the Information Security Officer, ensuring the privacy and security of our data in compliance with healthcare regulations. Cybersecurity has become a growing focus in recent years, I lead efforts to protect systems and respond to evolving threats. I collaborate closely with staff on IT projects and provide daily support to help resolve any technological issues they encounter. What I love most about my role is that every day brings a new challenge. Healthcare and IT are constantly evolving, and I am proud to play a part behind the scenes in supporting excellent patient care. I enjoy working with the dedicated team at Virginia Gay Hospital and supporting staff. I chose to pursue a career in this field because I have always had a love for technology. My biggest contribution to the team is that I have dedication and kindness to VGH to make it a great place for employees and patients. I am working toward completing my bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity by the end of 2025—a goal I am proud to be pursuing while working full time and managing multiple responsibilities. It is a rewarding journey that strengthens both my skills and my commitment to the field.

I was raised on a farm south of Vinton and loved that I had the opportunity to grow up there with my mom, dad, and brother. Livestock and 4-H were a big part of that experience. One fun fact about me is that I was born at Virginia Gay Hospital and now have worked here the past 29 years.

I have been married to my husband, Jake, for 30 years. We live on an acreage outside of Garrison and have two children. Our son Jacob (29) holds a Ph.D. in Astrophysics and works at the University of Arizona. Our daughter Katie (27) has her Bachelor’s Degree in Ag Education and is a crop specialist with Agrisompo. We are proud grandparents of one grandson and are excited to welcome our granddaughter in October. We love our roles as Nana and Papa. We have a one-year-old Berne doodle that keeps us on our toes. One thing I cannot live without is my family. They are the most important thing to me. We enjoy going to a cabin we have on the river to relax, boat, and soak up the sun! My favorite vacation spot is Glacier National Park in Montana. If someone were to describe me in three words, they would be kind, happy and short. I am passionate about community and volunteering, especially the fire service. I have been a part of the Garrison Emergency Services Auxiliary for the past 31 years and have participated in many events and fundraisers for the department as also now my husband Jake is the current Fire Chief for Garrison. An experience that has had a lasting impact on me was being diagnosed with Breast Cancer in July 2022. After several rounds of chemo, radiation, and surgery I am now cancer free! It was a trying time and made me think about life in a different way. I am very thankful for having the support of my friends and family during that time.
