Virginia Gay Hospital offers home sleep study and a private sleep study suite within the hospital if prescribed.
Our private sleep study suite contains a large comfortable bed, a private bathroom and a television. While you rest, Virginia Gay Hospital technicians continuously and unobtrusively monitor audio and video information via advanced digital polysomnography.
During the study, we assess your sleep stages by recording brainwaves (EEG), eye movements (EOG) and muscle tone (EMG). We also carefully examine your breathing throughout the night by measuring your airflow, breathing effort, snoring and oxygen saturation. Leg movements and heart rate (ECG) are also monitored to provide a comprehensive evaluation of your sleep.
A home sleep study includes equipment that monitors your heart rate, oxygen saturation, breathing, and chest wall movement, while you sleep in the comfort of your own bed and home. The results from a home sleep study can rule out sleep apnea and help diagnose other sleep disorders. If sleep apnea is indicated, an overnight in our private sleep study suite with more sophisticated monitoring capabilities may be prescribed.
A split night study is a combination of a diagnostic and CPAP/ BIPAP titration study. The first half is used to diagnose sleep apnea and then midway through the night CPAP/ BIPAP is started. The sleep tech spends the rest of the night adjusting the pressure until breathing has been normalized.
