After an illustrious 44-year career dedicated to healthcare excellence, Michele Schoonover, CEO of Virginia Gay Hospital, has announced her retirement. Schoonover, a native of Waterloo, Iowa, and a resident of Vinton since 1979, leaves behind a legacy of exceptional leadership, community advocacy, and unwavering commitment to patient care.
Michele Schoonover’s journey in healthcare began at St. Luke’s Hospital, where she honed her skills for five years before joining Virginia Gay Hospital in 1980 as a radiology technician. Over the years, she exhibited an unparalleled dedication to professional development, earning her BA in Business Administration and later her MBA in Business Administration in 1998.
Her career trajectory within Virginia Gay Hospital exemplifies her commitment to growth and excellence. After obtaining her BA degree, Schoonover transitioned into administration and the purchasing department, quickly ascending to the role of Director of General Services. For the past five years, she has served as the esteemed CEO of Virginia Gay Hospital, guiding the institution with wisdom, vision, and compassion.
Beyond her remarkable professional achievements, Schoonover’s impact extends into the community through her extensive volunteer work. For over 31 years, she has been an active member of the Vinton Kiwanis Club, embodying the spirit of service and community engagement. Additionally, she has served as a past VU Board member and is a current member of the Dementia Friendly Vinton Action Team, advocating for the needs of vulnerable populations.
