Virginia Gay Hospital is the community’s largest employer and provides a wide array of services, diagnostic testing, and clinical expertise (Acute Care (inpatient), Emergency Medicine, Home Health, Imaging Services, Laboratory, Nursing and Rehabilitation, Respiratory Therapy, Sleep Studies, Surgical Services and Therapy Services. As a leader in rural healthcare and specializing in family medicine Virginia Gay Hospital and Clinics serves families in the greater Benton County, Iowa with family medical clinics in Atkins (SE Benton Co.), Van Horne (SW Benton Co.), Urbana (NE Benton Co.) and in Vinton. Founded with a gift from Virginia Walcutt-Gay in 1914, the hospital has been able to maintain independence because of the generous support from the community.
Vinton offers the best of small town living with convenient opportunities to engage with larger communities nearby. Iowa City, home of the Hawkeyes, is just 60 miles away. Cedar Rapids and Waterloo are both just 30 miles away. With only four hours to Minneapolis, Omaha, or Kansas City, and only 4.5 hours to Chicago, a weekend away doesn’t have to be devoted to travel.
The Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District has great facilities but there are also great things happening in the classrooms. Iowa’s education consistently ranks highly compared to the other states and Vinton-Shellsburg’s student achievement consistently ranks highly compared to other districts in Iowa. All staff – administrators, associates, bus drivers, coaches, custodians, food service, teachers, secretaries – are committed to making a positive difference for the kids they serve.
We offer a wide variety of co-curricular experiences including swimming, bowling and trap shooting as well as more traditional sports, music and speech activities. Our class sizes continue to be lower than most other districts in the area and state. Over 75% of our employees live in the district they serve which is a reflection of their commitment and connection to the school district and community.
Vinton is moving ahead in all areas of community improvement. We are actively pursuing new housing options and planning is underway to provide fiber-to-the-home throughout the community. Our parks system is the envy of other communities our size and we will soon add an excellent mountain biking trail to our list of leisure assets. Vinton is a great place to live, if you prize safety, excellence in education, and local access to high-quality healthcare.
