Advanced 3D Mammography

A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray examination of the breast used to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages, often before symptoms appear. Regular screening mammograms are one of the most effective tools for finding breast cancer early, when treatment is often most successful.

Virginia Gay Hospital offers advanced 3D mammography (breast tomosynthesis), which captures multiple images of the breast from different angles to create detailed, layered views of breast tissue. Compared to traditional 2D mammography, 3D imaging improves the detection of invasive breast cancers while reducing the need for additional imaging due to false-positive findings. The exam takes only a few seconds longer than a standard mammogram and does not exceed FDA radiation safety guidelines.

New Technology Designed Around You

Our new Fuji ASPIRE Cristalle 3D Mammography System includes several advanced features designed to improve both the patient experience and image quality:

  • Comfort Paddles with a flexible four-way tilting design help provide more even breast compression while reducing discomfort during the exam.
  • Improved hexagonal detector technology increases detector sensitivity while helping reduce radiation exposure.
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) image analysis provides radiologists with an additional layer of support during image interpretation, helping improve diagnostic confidence.
  • Intelligent Automatic Exposure Control automatically optimizes image quality while using lower radiation doses for all breast types, including patients with breast implants.

These enhancements allow our experienced mammography technologists to provide high-quality images while making the exam as comfortable as possible.

Dense Breast Tissue

Approximately 40% of women have dense breast tissue. Dense breast tissue can make abnormalities more difficult to detect on traditional mammograms, making 3D mammography especially beneficial. Breast density is determined by the radiologist after reviewing your mammogram.
