Virginia Gay Hospital Welcomes Family Medicine Physician Dr. Scott Besong
VINTON, Iowa — September 2026 — Virginia Gay Hospital is pleased to welcome Scott Besong, MD, to the VGH medical team as a Family Medicine physician.
Dr. Besong joins VGH following completion of his Family Medicine residency at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from Ross University School of Medicine and a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Central Florida.
As a Family Medicine physician, Dr. Besong provides comprehensive care for patients across the lifespan, with an emphasis on preventive medicine, chronic disease management, acute care and patient education.
His residency training included a broad range of clinical experiences in family and internal medicine, pediatrics, OB/GYN, emergency medicine, psychiatry, dermat
ology, ENT, sports medicine and geriatrics. He also gained experience performing minor office procedures, including joint injections, skin biopsies, wound care, suturing and incision and drainage.
Dr. Besong’s healthcare experience began long before medical school. He worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant in Florida and Ohio, providing direct patient care in nursing homes and hospital settings, including intensive care and medical-surgical units.

Dr. Besong said his early experiences in healthcare helped shape his approach to medicine.
“Working directly with patients as a CNA gave me an appreciation for the importance of listening, compassion and treating every person with dignity,” said Dr. Besong. “Those values have continued to guide me throughout my medical training. I am excited to join Virginia Gay Hospital and to build meaningful relationships with patients and families while providing quality care close to home.”
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Besong has been involved in medical education, leadership and community outreach. He co-founded and served as vice president of the Medical Multicultural Club at Ross University School of Medicine and served as an Anatomy Lab Teaching Assistant. His community involvement has included health screenings, blood pressure and diabetes education, school outreach and Habitat for Humanity.
Dr. Besong is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American College of Physicians. He speaks English fluently and conversational French.
